ITX motherboards capable of playing the latest games are just one piece of the puzzle. To enjoy those games, you need a powerful video card. It looks like the design team at Lian Li is trying to make things easier. The new Lian Li PC-Q08 computer case is their solution. It’s a mini-ITX aluminum case that will house a standard ATX power supply and has 300mm of room for high-end video cards. It also features anti-vibration mounts and USB 3.0 ports on the front of the case.

There is one 5.25” external drive bays and six interior 3.5” drive bays. The PC-Q08 also features 2 expansion slots allowing for double-width PCIe video cards.

The case is available in black, silver and red and includes a 140mm front fan with blue (black/silver) or red (red) LED lighting.

We start with home server hardware. The first release of Windows Home Server in 2007 shipped on a variety of hardware that you could pick up from your local Best Buy, PC World or favourite online store. Fast forward to Windows Home Server 2011, and dedicated hardware is more difficult to find. So you’re left with the choice to either purchase an off the shelf PC or small server (such as HP’s excellent ProLiant MicroServer) and install the Windows Home Server 2011 software, or build your own. If you don’t fancy a build project, then skip to Chapter 4 for installation goodness. Otherwise, grab your screwdriver and spirit of adventure and come with me!

Researching and building any computer is fun, and there are great benefits to building rather than buying. You can tailor the computer exactly to your needs, have greater choice over the size, scale and components selected and ensure you future proof the design for future upgrades. If you have never built a PC before, it may seem a little daunting from the outside looking in. In reality, with a little bit of research, and the right components, it’s actually really easy to build a home server and you’ll get a lot more satisfaction the first time you boot it compared to one bought off the shelf! So, let’s hop to it, as I walk you through a home server self-build.

What Kind of Home Server Do You Need?

Before you even start thinking about components, step back and spend a little time thinking about what you wish to do with a home server. You can segment your thinking into a number of categories:

Processing Power & RAM

Whilst a home server doesn’t need to run at a blistering pace like a gaming desktop PC, you’ll need to ensure you select an appropriate processor and RAM to suit the type of tasks you wish to run on the server.

  • Do you want a basic setup that will just back-up your PCs, share files and folders and allow you to access your computers remotely?
  • Do you want something more powerful, that will take advantage of more advanced features like media streaming and transcoding (real time video conversion and streaming from one format to another)?
  • Is low power consumption important to you (bearing in mind the server will be switched on 24-7?)
  • Do you want to install home server add-ins to extend the server’s feature set?

If you want basic with a low power footprint, take a look at Intel’s Atom processor range. The dual-core Atom processor is the current favourite for many manufacturers building low cost, low power home servers. Don’t scrimp on the RAM, especially if you wish to run add-ins on the home server – go for at least 2GB, as it’s cheap enough nowadays. If you’re likely to be streaming high definition video, and want to take advantage of those media streaming and video transcoding features, then you’ll be more comfortable with a more powerful processor and RAM combination. Take a look at Intel’s dual-core Pentium processors, or even the Core i3/Core i5 range. Paired up with 4GB RAM, you’ll have easily enough power for your current and future needs. Do make sure that you select a processor that supports 64-bit operating systems, as  Windows Home Server 2011 is compatible only with these chips. Most modern processors are absolutely fine, but if you go for something a little older or obscure, make sure you check the manufacturer’s website.

Once you’ve decided on a motherboard, do check what type of RAM is compatible with that motherboard and how many slots are available to help you determine what type of RAM to buy.

Storage Needs

A good home server doesn’t just have to fit all of the music, video, photos and other data you have today. It needs to have a bit of wiggle room for the future too. So think through the following questions:

  • How big is your media collection now? And in the future?
  • Do you store a lot of video, music and photos, or is it mainly documents and other small files?
  • Do you need a server that can be expanded internally with additional hard drives in the future?
  • Do you need a server that can be expanded externally with an eSATA drive enclosure or USB Hard Drives?

I’d recommend you building a home server with at least two internal hard drives of at least 500GB each. Storage is reducing in price all the time, so if you can stretch to 1TB or 2TB drives, then do so – you’ll be amazed how quickly you can fill drives up. When thinking about future expansion, you may want to add additional hard drives internally, so you’ll need to look for a motherboard with 4+ SATA ports – they’re now very common. Your home server chassis will also need room to house those drives, so again, it’s well worth thinking about future expansion up front. Even if you only install two drives today, you’re safe in the knowledge that you have that wiggle room when you need it.

Footprint

Importantly, you need to think about where you are going to position your home server. In the office, under the stairs, in a cupboard or closet or out on the desktop? There’s no rules about where to place your home server, other than ensuring you can run an Ethernet cable between the server and your router. But it’s position in the home or office may have an impact on the physical size of home server you want to build. In turn, that will dictate the size of chassis and motherboard form factor you end up purchasing. The good news is there’s a huge variety of chassis and motherboards out there, and you can now find small Mini-ITX motherboards and cases that can fit four or even six hard drives without taking up a huge amount of space.

If the server is going to be on show, you may wish to invest a little more in the overall look and feel of the chassis – better finishes, colours and aesthetics. If it’s tucked away in a cupboard, you may be less concerned with looks.

Networking

As your home server will spend most of its time moving files backwards and forwards, it’s good to ensure you have a fast connection. Many newer motherboards now come with Gigabit Ethernet as standard, which is a great choice, but bear in mind that you’ll only benefit from the faster speeds if your router and other devices on the network also support Gigabit Ethernet. If not, you’ll be transferring at the standard “Fast” Ethernet speeds (sometimes marked as 10/100), still plenty fast enough for your needs.

Other Considerations

Whilst they’re not strictly necessary, if you want to access the home server directly, then you’ll need a monitor connection (VGA, DVI, HDMI) as well as a USB keyboard and mouse to control the server. Bear in mind, that you should mostly use the Windows Home Server Dashboard on a network connected PC to control the server, so direct access isn’t required, but if you want it, then ensure you’ve got plenty of USB ports available. If you’re likely to be importing a lot of photos from a camera on to your home server, then an integrated card reader may also be useful – again, it’s unorthodox to see these on a home server, but the benefit of building your own home server is that you can configure it exactly for you needs!

With regard to video and audio processing, most motherboards you’ll come across will have some kind of integrated audio and video processing on board. That’s absolutely fine for your needs, there’s no need to look for additional AV cards for the home server.

Collate Your Components

Make a list of all of the components you wish to buy, then go shopping! When everything arrives, collate all of the kit so it’s at hand when you need it. For our walkthrough, I’ve decided to go for a high power “media server” configuration. It’s a little over-specced for basic use, but will ensure it lasts a good while….

Phoenix-based Avnet Inc. reported record net income despite slightly lower revenue in its most recent quarter.

Avnet’s sales revenue for the quarter ending Dec. 31 was $6.69 billion, down from $6.77 billion during the quarter ending Jan. 1, 2011, based on documents filed Thursday with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Despite the lower revenue, net income for the most recent quarter was a record $147 million, compared with $141 million during the same period a year earlier.

The company reported earnings per share of $0.98. During the same period a year earlier, Avnet reported earnings per share of $0.91.

Avnet, which is listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol AVT, has two primary business units.

One sells electronic components to be used inside computers, industrial machinery, cars, appliances and other electronic devices. The other unit provides custom-designed information-technology systems for small- and medium-size businesses, including computer hardware, software and training.

Another factor that boosted Avnet’s earnings in the second quarter was a price increase for hard-disk drives caused by supply constraints in the market, the company said.

“While the macroenvironment presented some top-line challenges, our team did a good job adjusting to market conditions and delivered another strong quarter, with improvements across many parts of our business,” Avnet CEO Rick Hamada said.

Arizona’s largest publicly traded company in terms of annual revenue, Avnet has been on a buying spree lately, snapping up smaller high-tech firms all over the world.

During its second fiscal quarter, Avnet closed on the acquisitions of nine businesses: Unidux, Broadband, Eurotone, Center Cell, itX Group Ltd., Amosdec, Prospect Technology, JC Tally Trading and DE2.

My feeling is based around my assumption that few wanderers have a say so about itx case. The RAM slots are keyed to only allow installation in one orientation. The pricing is usually very competitive depending what options you go with. Final Conclusion Total Cost= $502 So here it is! With so many varieties of itx case it will be hard to determine this. Due to the restricted size, a Mini-ITX motherboard usually only comes with a single expansion card slot and RAM port. CPU fans for Mini-ITX computers often use push-pins to hold the fan in place. Go for it. Single slot doesn't mean less performance and less upgradeability though, there are single slot GTX 570s out there too. You could, of course, expect to discover numerous different models of silent mini itx case. Slim itx case - Nobody can use it. Back in November we gave you the model names of Intel's upcoming 7-series motherboards alongside some fairly basic details as far as the specifications went, but now we can offer you a much more detailed look at what Intel has planned for its Executive series of motherboards. These are Intel's motherboards for office computers as far as the chipsets are concerned, but at least one of the new models should be more than suitable for home users too.

Starting at the bottom of the executive series we have the DB75EN – codename Elkhorn Creek – which is based on the B75 chipset. This mATX board is pretty kitted out considering it's targeting the small business market. In terms of slots, we have a single x16 PCI Express 3.0 slot, one PCI Express x1 2.0 slot and two PCI slots – do keep in mind that Intel's Q and B-series chips have native PCI support, something the consumer focused chipsets lack.

Moving on we have one SATA 6Gbps port, three SATA 3Gbps ports, four DIMM slots and headers for two USB 3.0 ports and four USB 2.0 ports. At the rear we have a PS/2 port, two USB 3.0 ports, four USB 2.0 ports, an eSATA port, 5.1-channel audio (via three jacks), Intel Gigabit Ethernet and a DVI-D and a D-sub connector.

Next up we have another mATX board, namely the DQ77MK – codename Moccasin Peak – but this time things are somewhat more interesting even from a consumer standpoint. The layout is similar to the DB75EN as far as we can tell with a single PCI Express x16 3.0 slot, a single PCI Express 2.0 slot and one PCI slot, but here we also get an open-ended PCI Express 2.0 x4 slot into which x16 slots can be fitted. Intel has also added a mini-card PCI Express slot that can be put in mSATA mode for some SSD caching action.

Furthermore the board has two SATA 6Gbps ports – thanks to the Q77 chipset – three SATA 3Gbps ports – or two if the mSATA slot is in use – and headers for two USB 3.0 ports, four USB 2.0 ports and one FireWire port. Around the rear the board has four USB 2.0 ports, two USB 3.0 ports, a FireWire port, an eSATA port, a pair of Intel Gigabit Ethernet adapters, 5.1-channel audio, a DisplayPort, a DVI-D and a DV-I port. Not a bad board at all for an office PC and even pretty decent for a home system.

The third and final Executive series motherboard launching next quarter from Intel is the DQ77KB – codenamed Kearnens Bend – is potentially the most interesting out of the lot. This mini-ITX board is packed to the brim with features and if you're looking at building yourself a DIY all-in-one PC, or any other mini-ITX system for that matter, then this board is well worth a look. It's not the obvious choice for everyone's needs, especially as it requires an external 19V power adapter, but on the upside this should make for a quite system.

As far as mini-ITX boards from Intel goes, this one is loaded with expansion options, including a PCI Express 2.0 x4 slot – although in this case it's connected to the CPU – one half-size and one full-size mini card PCI Express slot – with support for mSATA on the full size-slot – two SO-DIMM slots that sadly are limited to DDR3 1333MHz memory, two SATA 6Gbps ports, three SATA 3Gbps ports, LVDS and eDP connectors and headers for up to five USB 2.0 ports. Add to that four rear USB 3.0 ports, a pair of Intel Gigabit Ethernet ports, a pair of audio jacks and a DisplayPort and HDMI connector and this is one sweet little board.

Common for all the boards is support for Windows 7 and Windows 8, as well as RedHat and SUSE Linux certification. Both of the Q77 boards also support Intel Rapid Storage technology with RAID, Intel ATM 8.0 and support for a discrete TPM module. Sadly we don't have any information on pricing as yet, but the boards should be announced alongside Intel's upcoming Ivy Bridge processors in early April.

The KINO-9653 features a very unique heatsink design that allows it to be fanless and very low profile.  However, the thermal solution is very flexible and if your application requires it, we can offer a low profile active solution.

The integrated heatsink has flexible screw mounting holes.  It features mounting holes compliant with VESA mounting standards ( 75mm x 75mm / 100mm x 100mm ) on the bottom of the enclosure.  Both sides feature mounting holes for side mounting or for a drawer design.

The KINO-9653 also features an all in one DC power design.  There is no longer a need for an extra DC power board or excess cables.  The KINO-9653 as an integrated DC to DC power module on boards, and supports a single voltage 12V DC input.  Customers can use an AC to DC power adapter to power the motherboard, or a direct 12VDC source, via a terminal block.
